CAPGROSSOS

CARLES PIERA

About the work

Let's talk about cultural innovation. In 1679, someone thought the best way to liven up a local festival was to build meter-tall papier-mâché heads and put them on people's heads. Since then, these giant heads have continued to transform the festival and the identities we embody.

In these rooms you will find the traditional "capgrossos" (big-headed figures) of popular festivals and then reinterpretations that play with transformation, personality and the way we show ourselves to the world, representing the cultural diversity of Barcelona.

Each figure represents a distinct contemporary tribe: people you might find at a festival, on the beach, on the subway, or walking through any neighborhood in the city.
